If you were using image linking, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the images misbehaved once the links could no longer find the source files. That said, upgrading Office usually leaves such files from previous versions intact. A clean install on another system, though, won't add files that it doesn't use.
Embedded images should have no such issues.
You also mention upgrading to Win 10. That path has led to many complaints of corrupted Office installations and yours may be one afflicted by that curse. You might try repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change).
