Your description suggests the Adobe Acrobat XI installation was faulty. Uninstalling & reinstalling it, or maybe just a repair, may resolve the problem. Having reinstalled Adobe Acrobat XI, you might try re-enabling its Word Addins at a less stressful time to see if they now work properly. Note too that the Adobe Acrobat XI Addins can be disabled from within Word itself.
