Default I cannot open .docx files even though I have MS Office 2016

So I am a student with a Mac. Because I am a student, MS allowed me to download either 2015 or 2016 edition of mac for free. I have trouble opening my chemistry lab files that I need for class because they are in .docx format. I already have the latest MS office, though it is in beta testing or something like that. How can I open the files. When I download it, it has a folder with a bunch of things in the .xml format. I will post pictures below.

As you can see in the first image, there are blue folders and that is what happens when I try to download a .docx file from my university website. The second image is what happens when I open the folder. Also inside the folder, I cannot open anything without my mac prompting me to find an application to open the file with.

Update: So apparently I can download and view .docx files. I just can't download it from my university website system.
