I would caution that this approach may not clear the problem. You could try creating a new mail profile, which would be equally effective as 'upgrading' and should establish whether that would clear the problem. It all depends where it is stuck.
If you open the e-mail account via its web access, rather than Outlook, can you clear it from there?
I am not convinced that the Outlook versions after 2010 are an 'upgrade' (though for most people the 32 bit version of Office 2010 is the version to use). I have seen nothing yet that would convince me to swap Office 2010 for a lter version.
