Default Formatting Heading 1

I am working with a 24 section manual. Each section begins using the Heading 1 style and is formatted to read "SECTION (x)" followed with the title of each section. My problem is that a tab is inserted following the section number and before I insert the title of that section. I do not want that because the tab makes the section/title become off-center. I want the section numbers/titles to be centered on 1 or 2 lines and to read:

SECTION (x). (Title) with two spaces separating the section number and the beginning of the title

...OR..

SECTION (x) <hard return>
(Title)

How do I get rid of the tab immediately following the section number?

(I know it is probably simple but, I think I have hit a mental block!!)

Thanks.
