You say you pasted using 'unformatted text', but that paste option doesn't produce (or fill) a table. The only way you'd get a table out of Excel data pasted as 'unformatted text' is if you then used Word's 'convert to table' process, in which case (assuming you used Word's defaults), I'd expect to see the entire table displaying three equal-width columns all the way down, including for empty cells.
As for Word freezing, that suggests you have a faulty Office installation, which will require uninstalling & reinstalling to fix.
