Default Breaking up a mergefield into parts

I've got a mergefield that is actually a combination of 2 fields in our database, but of course what I really need are the seperate versions but those are not available as a mergefield

In essence the mergefield (let's call it <<PAY>>) consists out of <<class>> and <<level>>. In the mergefield <<PAY>> it's denoted as <<class.level>>

To make matters worse it's not a fixed width. Both <<class>> and <<level>> can consist out of 1 digit or 2 with <<class>> also having the possibility of having 2 letters (instead of digits).

In Excel this would have been easy enough, but does anyone know of a way to do it in Word?

While I'm at it, is there somewhere a list of functions you can use on mergefields? Been looking but so far have come up empty.

Any help much appreciated.
