I know I am stupid, but when I type 0103 and then press alt+x I get 0103≈

Sorry about misunderstanding the term "Latin Extended-A character sub-set". I now understand you mean: of the latin alphabet (which we use in the western world), there is an extended subset to each letter.

But for my A I have no turned around ^ Also most of those extended subsets you refer to as being present in most every font are the vocals plus a "spanish" n and a "c" with a tiny "(" under it.

Look at my attached picture and you will know what I mean. This is when I select "times" (the font times) from the left window and then go to insert->special characters. There are all sorts of "a", but not the one I need (in fact the symbols look like letters common for french, spanish and scandinavian languages).
