I have now resolved the original issue however I have a new issue below:
I have created a new Global Template and placed it in a new location on my laptop. I have also created a shortcut to the new Global Template. I opened a new plan from the new template and removed all of the current custom fields and then saved the plan as a template to overwrite the new Global template. However when I open a new plan from the "new" global template all of the custom fields from the original template reappear. If I remove the custom fields from the new template the custome fields are removed from the standard Global template (thankfully I have a backup of those custom fields).
Has anyone else had this issue and if so how did you resolve it?
