Simple way to see if protection might be your problem is to create a new Word file and try to change the color of text in that file. If you can't in a new file, then the problem is in your installation. If you can in the new file but not the existing one, it is likely protected.

Click on the Protect Document button on the Review Tab or Developer Tab.
