Default MS Word 2010 Master Document - hyperlinks not working within subdocuments

I'm working on a manual written in MS Word 2010 which has various different chapters all currently created as separate Word docs. I've decided that having a MasterDocument is the way to go so as to pull the data together at the end, as well as being able to maintain the individual docs separately.

Firstly, can anybody answer the question as to whether Master documents are safe to use in Word 2010? Contentious area it seems.

Secondly, i've had a play with using master documents in my task quite successfully. But what i've found is that when all the paged are pulled in to create one big document, and converted to PDF, my TOC hyperlinks aren't working in the subdocuments. The TOC links are working fine in the MasterDocument i.e the main TOC at the top, but when I click on any of the other TOCs within the subdocument, no linking.

Everything appears to work fine when they are independent documents and converted to PDF, it's just when they are combined. Incidentally, figures and tables TOCs work fine in the subdocuments. Just the main chapter TOC.

The files are NOT read only so this is not the problem.

Any ideas?
