The date given by the Add-In will insert the date the document was created (a CREATEDATE field) and that will not change unless it is re-created using Save-As. This is different from the default of a DATE field.
Using Date Fields in Microsoft Word
It is different from the AutoComplete in that it is not necessarily the current date. This is the only other way I know to insert a date without macros.
