A time machine would be very helpful. Sorry.
Word does not play well with flashdrives or other removable media. Never has. Using Word with a flashdrive is currently the number one way of corrupting a document.

For future reference, do not use Word directly with anything on a flashdrive. That means do not open a document on a flashdrive, do not print a document on a flashdrive, do not save a document to a flashdrive from within Word.

With the document closed, use the Mac Finder to copy to/from the flashdrive and your hard drive.
