In "More Commands," "Advanced," under "Cut, copy, and paste," uncheck the box that says, "Keep bullets and numbers when pasting text with Keep Text Only option." Then, when you paste, choose "Keep Text Only" from the paste options in the pull-down menu. I tend to use your latter method of temporarily turning off the bullets, because more often I am pasting into another application than Word.
