You're correct on both counts. Nothing to be done about the first.

A registry hack can fix the latter.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\

Create a new DWord AutomaticPictureCompressionDefault and set it to 0 (ie OFF)

Obviously don't go there if you do not know what you are doing.
