Word 2013's handling of graphics seems to be a problem but there are a couple of things you can be doing to reduce the problems you are having.
1. Try graphic formats other than TIFF. If your graphic is line & text based I would save it in PNG or EMF format. If your graphic is dominated by a photograph then save instead to a high quality JPG. These file formats will give you much smaller file sizes than TIFF and this will avoid some of Word's memory issues that are causing the display issues.
2. Images inserted into Word which are wider than the column they are being inserted into are automatically shrunk to fit that column width. You can resize it afterwards.
