Default Adding another item to the end of an existing list

I often have to edit an MS Word document (2007 or 2010 depending on how long ago the person created the document) to add items to a list. The lists are organized like this ...

1. topic one

1.1 sub level 1
1.2 sub level 2
1.3 sub level 3

2. topic two

2.1 sub level 1
2.2 sub level 2
2.3 sub level 3

I need to add item 1.4 to the topic one list. I cannot figure out how to get 1.4 to show up and let me start typing with the numbered list. I have been able to put my cursor just behind "sub level 3" and hit return to get a new 1.3 to show up and the line below changes to 1.4. If its a simple list I can just copy and paste what is in the new 1.4 to 1.3 and enter my new stuff in 1.4. But often the stuff in 1.3 is very long and requires cutting and pasting pages of data. How can I create a new 1.4 item after 1.3 and not have to go through this copy and paste method?
