Default Single Line Spacing for Short Lists?

Hello, everyone.
I’m testing out Word and am having a minor but annoying problem with line spacing. I know a workaround to fix the problem, but I’d like to know if I can configure Word so that I don’t have to use this workaround.

I want the line spacing to be single-spaced. When I type text normally, in paragraph form (such as this text), there is no problem.

But when I type something that doesn’t take up a full line (i.e. a shopping list, for example), I don’t get single spacing. The image below shows you what I’m talking about.

The workaround is to press the SHIFT key and ENTER key at the same time.

This allows me to get single spacing for lists such as the one above. The image above shows the workaround in effect.

I went into the PARAGRAPH area via the ribbon and set the line spacing to Single, then set it as default for the normal.dot template, as shown below. That didn’t work.

So…is there a way to set up Word so that I can get lists such as the one above single spaced, without having to use SHIFT + ENTER, and just use ENTER by itself?

It’s not a real big deal to use SHIFT + ENTER, but I’d rather not, if possible. I'd rather just use ENTER.

Thank you very much.
