That's not really very useful!

You can use Insert > Picture OR Insert > Video (All files)

Try turning off auto compression BEFORE inserting the gif and see if that helps also make sure the gif is NOT inserted into a placeholder.

I would turn it off permanently personally which needs a registry tweak

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\P owerPoint\Options and create a DWord AutomaticPictureCompressionDefault set to zero (OFF)
