OK, assuming the links are viable, that sounds like a different issue relating to file associations.

While Word 2013 can open PDF files, it is not a PDF viewer like Adobe Reader, and so would not naturally be associated with Word 2013 (and older Word versions could not open it at all).

Even if you configure your PC to associate PDF format with Word 2013, others who have access to the shared drive are unlikely to have their PCs similarly configured.
