Try method 2 in the link given except, in case you have made changes to Word or recorded macros, rename the normal.dotm file instead of deleting it.
Normal Template in Microsoft Word - How to Find or Open the Normal Template

If things work fine with the renamed template, you can delete it at a later time. If you are missing something you kept stored in that template, write back and someone will tell you how to access it.
