Tables: Ensuring Rows Not Split Across Pages Yet Retaining Repeated Header
I am working with a table that spans multiple pages. I believe I have correctly configured the first row as a “header” row which is to reappear at the top of each page. I will explain what I believe to be a highly relevant characteristic of this table through an illustration: Imagine a table in which the first column provides the names of each of 5 baseball teams and the second column provides the names of each of 10 players on each team, each in their own row. I created a table with 51 rows and 2 columns. I then “merged” rows 2 through 11 inclusive (row 1 is the “header” row) under column 1 (but not column 2) to create a single cell (under column 1) for the name of the first team. Likewise for the rest of the table for the 4 other teams. So column 1 has 5 rows, but column 2 has 50 rows (not counting the header row). I am not sure it’s relevant but I set the “text direction” in each of the 3 rows that now comprise column 1 to run from bottom to top rather than from left to right.
Here is the problem: Since Word will obviously not let the team name run across the page boundary and be “split” by the repeated header, I really need to ensure that all the players on any team are listed on the same page. File 1 (attached) shows what happens if you allow players on one team to cross a page boundary. I tried to remedy this by “forcing” the row containing the last player on a given team to be the last row on a particular page (you do this via Control-Enter). This worked, except that I now have lost the repeated header (see File 2, attached). How can I (1) not have a team name run across multiple pages; and (2) keep my header on each page?
