Changing Office versions will not affect your files - or their accessibility. Your description suggests the files have been deleted and/or they have had their file 'hidden' attribute set. I haven't used Recuva, but the fact it didn't find any deleted files suggests one of three things:
1. the files haven't been deleted;
2. the files have been deleted and the sectors containing their names have been overwritten; or
3. Recuva is no good.
