Word 2007 document formats (docx and docm) are numerous xml files bundled together in a zip file. When you say you are opening it as an xml file, what exactly are you doing? What is the file extension on the document?

Are you opening the file from within Word or are you double-clicking it from Windows Explorer? If you are double-clicking it, what program is being used to open the file?
