Thanks very much for your reply. I didn't even think about zooming in that big. The ruler does then appear next to the document. I'm not used to working at that magnification, but it certainly does help.

The other thing that I realized I am missing (or maybe I'm imagining that it existed) is the rule line that you can drag from the left and top rulers. I could have sworn that earlier versions had that feature.

Also, one little kvetch about the rulers in Word 2013: You have to click on exactly the right spot to set a tab or else it doesn't work. In earlier versions, you could just click on the ruler and set the tab. Now it seems you have to click on the bottom of the ruler to set a tab. It's rather annoying.
