It does print without the HP printer installed. I probably left out a relevant part. The font involved is sent to the printer during setup, so is resident in the printer as long as it's not reset or turned off, in which case the setup needs performed again. So it's not actually in the drop down list for Word, at least if it is, I've never looked there or used it. We use PCL within the field code to define the font and designate the character.
Both the DOS system and the Word usage, on the HP, use this method of combining at print time.
