I've never encountered anyone with that interpretation before! After all, as the tutorial says in the Introduction, on page #1:

Similarly, on page #25, for the email merge it says:

]
Note: Your Catalog/Directory mailmerge main document shouldn’t have anything else – not even an extra empty paragraph; otherwise you may not get the expected results.

I'd have thought it pretty obvious from those two statements taken together that you don't copy either square bracket. And, if you thought you were meant to copy one, why not both?
