Larry, Stefan's advice to head for Shauna Kelly web site is the best. You won't find a tutorial anywhere to address your problem. Why? because its all messed up. You have "spaghetti numbering. Your "list" is actually 4 lists, driven by 4 driven by list templates.

I put it though my "snooper" and this is what it looks like under the hood.

1. Our company START OF LIST #1, LIST TEMPLATE “THREE”
2. We shall each retain .. PART OF LIST #1, LIST TEMPLATE “THIRD”
ACCOUNTS
3. Client. Client shall . PART OF LIST #1, LIST TEMPLATE “THIRD”
A. Trust ... START OF LIST #2 LIST TEMPLATE “ONE”
B. Peoples Account ... PART OF LIST #2, LIST TEMPLATE “ONE”
4. Associate. ... PART OF LIST NUMBER 1, LIST TEMPLATE “THIRD”
A. Equipment START OF LIST #3, LIST TEMPLATE “TWO
B. Building, PART OF LIST #3, LIST TEMPLATE “TWO”
C. BuildingNote Part OF List #3, list template Two
1) The parties jointly. START OF LIST #4, LIST TEMPLATE “FOURTH
2) Client shall execute PART OF LIST #4, LIST TEMPLATE “FOURTH”

A healthy list would be one list, driven by one list template. Its almost impossible to achieve that when using directly applied numbering in an environment where documents are shared by users of varying skill levels.

What is misleading to users is the fact that Word uses a style for these paragraphs (and applies the numbering directly over the style). Users are then misled to believe they are using a numbering style when, in fact, that is not so. The paragraphs in your document are numbered directly over style “List Paragraph”, an un-numbered style. What Stephan speaks of is true numbered style, which is different than the numbering in your document.

Sure you could make this work by defining a new MULTILEVEL list and repainting the paragraphs, directly but why go to all of that work only to have it come unglued again? The best expenditure of the time is, imo, to set up styles, apply the styles to the paragraphs and go forward hassle free (that is, hassle free at least until another user decides to lay direct numbering over a paragraph). At least when that happens, fixing it is easy by reapplying styles.

Hope this helps.
