Default Assigning templates to existing documents. Update Styles Enmasse.

I have a collection of documents (a master document and some subdocuments).

I want them to all use the same "styles" (partly in preparation to creating a table of contents).

It is my understanding that it is possible to create documents from a template, and then have those documents updated if the associated template is updated (which implies that they must remain "linked" to the template in some manner).

I would like to use this to control the styles within a group of documents (simply update the template to cause all documents to be updated).

However, all of the documents were created without using a template.

So, I wish to create a template (perhaps copy an existing one) whose purpose is to control formatting for this particular group of documents.

I then need to associate each of the documents with that template.

How can I "link" existing documents to a particular template?

If a master document has links to subdocuments which are all associated with the same template, and the template is changed, must each subdocument be opened and saved to "apply" the changes?

Or could I simply change the template and then print the master document?
  • How about creating a Table of Contents? Since that process is dependent on the header styles, which in turn are dependent on the template, can I simply update the template and then immediately create a table of contents from within the master document?
