Default Hyperlinks in tasks work differently

I like to put hyperlinks to folders and documents in Outlook tasks. When the task pops up, I can click on the link to open the document or a folder containing the information I need to complete that task. This is very useful, but it doesn't always work and I can't figure out why.

As far as I can tell, I always use the same procedure. I create the hyperlinks by dragging the file or folder from a Win Explorer window to the body of the task using the right mouse button. I get a pop-up offering me several choices (move, copy, create hyperlink). I select "Create hyperlink here". This always creates what looks like a valid hyperlink.

But the next time the task is opened, the results are different. It could be any one of these three situations:
  1. The hyperlink works perfectly.
  2. The hyperlink generates a warning message about a possible link, but if I say OK, it works.
  3. The hyperlink is converted to plain text and doesn't work at all.
Can someone explain what is happening and what I can do to get the hyperlinks to work reliably without the warning?
