Default Appendix file looses some formatting when inserted

I have a 100+ page book. The Appendices, just 10 pages (9 appendices), were created before I wrote the book. Specifically, each Appendix was created separately over several years and uses just text, with adjustments to font, font size, color, and margins. I combined each appendix into one file, inserting continuous breaks when margins differed, and inserting page breaks between each as well.

It all seemed fine...I was able to insert>file and add the appendices to the end, and the appendices looked fine. I continued editing the book. At some point, however, and I never did anything to the appendices after importing, some appendices got messed up. These things included inserting a blank page in the middle (in two different locations), a page into which I could not insert the cursor (but it showed blank on print preview), the loss of a couple of page breaks (and when I tried inserting it again, it caused the preceding page to to indent the final line).

Another problem was that, when I inserted page numbering, it showed fine on screen, but when printing, some page numbers (bottom right) would be mostly cut off, and Word warned me of it being outside the printable area. So I went into one of these, reduced the margins which were at minimum allowed values, but still the page number was cut off, with just the first couple of centimeters of the top showing.

So I deleted all the appendices including the page break at the end of the book part. I then inserted a new page break, then I re-inserted the Appendix file, but right away this time, all the bad formatting was there.

Do I need to post the appendices? While not proprietary, I'm not sure if the publisher (yes, it's been accepted!) would like that.

Please understand that my knowledge of Word is self-taught by use only, without help from others, and when I run into issues, I just fiddle until it looks okay. I suspect my fiddling did something non-intuitively wrong.
