Default PPT 2010 crashes at end of recording audio

At the end of a multislide presentation while recording the audio (about 2 hours), PowerPoint 2010 crashed (black screen in Win 7). After waiting I used Win 7 to close and attempted a recover. PPT found the recovery file but did not recover the audio. I may have provoked the crash by hitting the escape and right click keys too many times, apparent when recording it takes PPT a while to close. I then looked for the WAV files but did not find any. So here are my questions:
1) How does one successfully close a recording, just hit a key (escape/ right click) and wait? If so, how long is reasonable. Or is there a bug here?
2) Following a crash is there any way to find the audio? I think in early PPT the WAV files were separately recorded and only embedded upon saving the PPT file but it looks like PPT 2010 does something else.
thanks for any help
