I put some text in three columns and right clicked on the middle column and hid it. Then I clicked print. There was no gaps like you suggest. I personally prefer to use (in Office 2007) Page Layout tab - Print Area - Set print area (after highlighting what you want to print). Then set the paper size and orientation and that saves the settings for any future printing from that sheet. Perhaps try that instead of page breaks as there shouldn't be any gaps.
