Now, in your practice document,
- create a header with a StyleRef field to the strong style.
- Go back into the body of your document and change the target text, keeping the Strong formatting.
- Notice what happens to the StyleRef field in the header.
- Notice what happens (or doesn't happen) to the StyleRef field in the body of the text. StyleRef fields in headers and footers update virtually simultaneously. Those in the body of a document require something more. Since the fields you will be using will be in headers or footers this doesn't matter to you now.
- Put a few blank paragraphs (Enter key) in and format those as Body Text (not Strong). At the end, type "Second Target" and format it as Strong.
- Return to the Body Text style formatting. Add a blank paragraph or two.
- Create a new StyleRef field referring to the Strong formatting.
- See what that field shows.
- Now, create a StyleRef field above your second Target and see what that one shows.
- Move to the point immediately above this latest StyleRef field and press Ctrl+Enter to insert a manual page break.
- Press Ctrl+A and then F9.
- Look at each of the StyleRef fields, including those in the header on both the first and second page.
- Note that you did not make a different header for the second page but it shows something different because of the StyleRef field.
Now, you should have some grasp of how a
StyleRef Field works. It is very dynamic. Save this

While I am working, your next reading assignment is:
Understanding Styles in Microsoft Word
Sections / Headers and Footers in Microsoft Word 2007-2013
- Each new procedure in your manual will begin following a Section break - new page.
- Each part of your text that you want to be used to identify the procedure in the header must be marked with a separate custom character style.
- The same character style is used to mark the same identifier in each procedure.
- Each of those sections will be set to have a different first-page header.
- The continuation page headers will have your StyleRef fields.
Make a copy of your procedure manual and play with these concepts in the copy.
Hang in there. This stuff is complex, but it is something that can be done. After all, I'm a lawyer and I can do it.
