Your problems suggest you've used hard-formatting to override the underlying Style definitions of the various parts of your document and, when pasting them back together, Word is applying the destination document's Style definitions. It's been a few years since I've used Word 2000 (now almost 15 years old), which your profile says you're using, but I believe you can use Paste Special to preserve the source formatting.
