I've heard of people using Word 97-2003 under Windows 8 but haven't heard of anyone doing so without problems. None of these are supported in Windows 8 or later. They are labeled as not being compatible.

As Paul pointed out, your macros will likely run in the ribbon versions of Word (Word 2007+). Like you, I use many macros. I can't think of any that I use that have not worked. I skipped Word 2007 and use Word 2010/2013 pretty much exclusively.

I dropped my (Vista) laptop one too many times and like you am about to be forced into the Windows 8 world. I'm not pleased at the prospect. I still have templates with custom toolbars that I use. The only simple way to edit those toolbars is with Word 2003. If Windows 8 won't accommodate that I'll end up doing my tweaking on one of my other Vista or Windows 7 machines.
