Default Document showing up with all pictures missing?

I bought a new HP Vista computer in July of 2009. It has been driving me crazy ever since, and I can hardly wait till my Windows 7 disk arrives.

The screen threw so many commands at me that I decided I would ignore all that I could, as it was ridiculous

One of the programs I wanted was my old MS Word 2000 which I had on an original disc. I found it impossible to cope with the trial 2007 Word, that came with the computer.
So I loaded 2000 without too many problems, although there were a couple of blips. It seemed to work just fine in my first trial actions of the program, so I soon dug into documents that were works in progress when I bought the new computer.

Now a very strange occurrence is happening, that I have never experienced before. My one document is coming onscreen with all its many pictures missing. The first couple of times I loaded the program the pictures showed up ok in the Preview scenes but not in the regular Print Layout view. The last time I tested it even the Preview scene was absent of the pictures.

I am thinking that perhaps there is a command someplace that I did not realize I had activated, and that is the reason for the missing pictures. But I have searched all over the place and have found no leads in that direction.

I also realize that this might be a problem where my Word 2000 is not acceptable to my Vista computer, but I need someone in the Know to tell me that, and thus this email.
On the other hand perhaps someone out there can tell me where that command is, that would allow a document to appear onscreen without it's pictures.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
