How are you checking that PPT is reducing the dpi of high res images?

I ask because it doesn't!

By default when you save images ARE compressed but you can turn this off in Options > Advanced (In 2010) In 2007 you need to alter the registry
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\P owerPoint\Options
Create a new DWord AutomaticPictureCompressionDefault and set its value to 0

If you are exporting the slides as images this is a different matter but that's not what you said.
