Are you using headers and footers?

Footers are great for cheating when it comes to borders/changing things on every odd and even page throughout a whole document! And it's also great because it means you can't accidently mess it up while typing/adding photos, unlike just using a shape as a 'background'.

If you are creating a recipe book are you:
A) Printind double sided?
B) Have page number as a footer?

If so, then it's easy!

Click Different Odd & Even Pages under the Options group if you haven't already.
Now, the page number is on alternating sides on each odd and even page. (think when you read a book, the text is on the same corner when you flip it, so the page number has to change each odd an even page in order for the page number to always be on that outside corner)

Make sure you are still in the Header & Footer Tools Design Tab.
(If you aren't, just go to Insert, Footer, then go to the bottom and click Edit Footer.)
Now depending on what border you are using. You can pick any shape (or clip art picture if you'd like, or import your own) and cover the whole page with it.
Just say you want a plain square border. Pick a square in Insert, Shapes. Drag it out so it is the size of your page, and makes a border.
It's handy because then you can edit it's thickness/colour as you would any other word shape.

Once you have finished the first page. Do the same on the other page, with your alternate picture/border.

When you are done editing your footers. Click Close Head & Footer on the right of your ribbon. (Or, double clicking anywhere your footer isn't...It's quicker hehe)

Now you should have:

Page numbers on the corrent side for double sided printing.
A different border on each odd page, and a different border for each even page.
