Is this a modified main menu that you are referring to? In that case, try the following: Open your Word 2003 template as a document (so that you see the template file name instead of "Document 1" on the title bar) and make sure it is the active window. Press Alt+F11 to display the Visual Basic Editor. Press Ctrl+G to activate the Immediate window. Type

CommandBars.ActiveMenuBar.Reset

and press Enter. Save and close the template. Restart Word.
