Are you saying that you want only part of the paragraph to be formatted as a heading (and included in the TOC, if there is one)? In that case, insert a style separator, for example using the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+Enter.
When working with style separators, you may want to display nonprinting marks, because that makes things a lot easier. "Ordinary" paragraph marks are represented by pilcrows, ¶, while style separators are represented by ¶ characters surrounded by a dotted line.
