I am working in a pre-existing document that appears to have some text marked as not requiring a spell check. When I do a spell check it is not picking up obvious mistakes (nor highlighting them) and a message comes up "Text marked with 'do not check spelling or grammar' was skipped".

Any ideas on how to change this please? I have tried microsoft help but to no avail.

thanks

Thank you for letting is know you solved it. For anyone reading this thread in the future, the marking of text with 'do not check spelling or grammar' is similar to character formatting. It can be in the Style or direct formatting.

If you select all text in the document you can change this attribute directly. The exact method to change it is different in different versions of Word.

[Edit]
You can check formatting of a particular word by clicking on it and then pressing Shift+F1. You should see something like this:

Under Font formatting does it say : Language: Do not check spelling or grammar?

The screenshot above is from a computer with only one language installed, with spelling and grammar installed and active. This is a character(font)-level formatting in Word.
