What is a "thread?" The same as a post?

Suddenly my page numbers on word docs have become shaded. Can't see the numbers at a glance, so now they're useless. Is this something I can change back to how it's been for years? Or has ms central beamed this into my computer forever, because somebody there thinks it's pretty, function be damned?
