Default
WordPad is a standard Windows 7 accessory. Have you tried repairing your Office installation (via Help|Detect & Repair)? Try doing that, then re-installing the compatability pack (if it's not now installed). Also, check whether you can open a docx file from within Word, rather than from Windows Explorer. If you can, it's just a matter of file associations needing correction.
