That is not correct. The display of text boundaries is supported in all formats. Indeed, Jamal's second screenshot demonstrates its use with a docx format document!!!

Of course, given that the cursor is typically a narrow I-beam, it's hardly surprising that it can become indistinct when positioned over a vertical line of any kind. If this is a problem for you, you can of course change the cursor's appearance (for all applications) in the Windows Control Panel.
