For Question 1 hopefully a VBA guru will respond.
On Question 2 have you considered creating a link to your excel data in your Word document. That way whenever the data changes in Excel it will update in Word whether the Word document is open or not (both documents need to be on the same network and their locations must not be changed for this to work).
