Default Word document won't save too large?

I have created a new Word Document using The Master Genealogist program. My file is currently 679MB and 283 pages long. I am creating a genealogy book (I created a larger book 3 years ago using Office2000 and Windows XP). The program creates the document part way and then the pictures that are embedded start to show as just little empty boxes. It will not let me save the document says not enough memory have tried to convert, and have tried to save as a 97-2003 file. It keeps coming up with insufficient memory and/or the path is unavailable. I took this document on a flash drive to a friend that has a Mac and they were able to open the document and see all the pictures, they then converted the file to a PDF file for me and now I can see all the pictures so they were created just will not display because Word has a size limitation of I believe 512MB. Is there any way around this size problem. My last book was a total of 598 pages long 830MB and had more pictures than the current book I am trying to produce. What happened between Word2000 and Word2010?
