Is this a bulleted list? Also, which versions of Word are involved?

Recent versions of Word may not add a tab stop at the location of the hanging indent, which may cause issues, especially if the document is saved back to (say) *.doc format (Word 97-2003 format).

You can click to select the bullet character; then right-click and choose Adjust List Indents from the context menu. Make sure indentation is correctly defined (as exemplified above).
