Default Cross Reference Heading Number with the word "Section" included

Cross Referencing in Word 2010

I have a document with multi-level heading numbering:

ARTICLE 1. (heading 1)
Section 1.1 (heading 2)
(a) (heading 3), etc.

In particular, Heading 2 is set up so that the number automatically includes the word "Section". I have a user that wants to refer to multiple Heading 2s, but only wants to include the number itself, not the word "Section".

For example, the user wants to refer to "Sections 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3". When we insert the references, they are, of course, inserting as "Section 1.1, Section 1.2 and Section 1.3". This happens in no context and full context.

I cannot figure out how to remove the word "Section" as it is, in fact, a part of the heading number itself.

I have considered using an AutoNumLgl field for each of the headings and then bookmarking them, making me able to cross refer to the bookmarks but this is not a good enough solution for my user.

I have tried the Arabic switch (\* Arabic) among other things to no avail.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. (The user insists we could do this in a prior version of Word, but I'm not so sure that's actually the case...).

Thanks,

Barbara
