Default How set up a 'paragraph number'?

I'm embarrassed to ask this question but I'd can't find how to set up in a 'paragraph number' (if that's what it's called) in Word 2007. In Word 2003 I could place little numbers at particular places in the document that would automatically re-number themselves when you insert another one somewhere, and which one can cross-reference elsewhere, with the cross-references re-numbering themselves when you press F9. As I recall, what I'll looking for was called ListNum in Word 2003.

As far as I can see the answer doesn't appear to be bookmarks.

Thanks for your help.

UPDATE: Finally I remembered the Word 2003 command Alt+I F, and rest of it kicked into my memory when the dialog window came up. The thing you're inserting is called a field. I explored the buttons on the Insert ribbon more carefully, and finally determined that this is now housed in button called Quick Parts, which suggesting nothing whatever to me, and still doesn't. Why in the world is it called that?
